Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who can join the Tiger Sharks Swim Team?
A. Children ages 4-18 whose family lives in Lookout Canyon can join the swim team!
Q. Does my child need to know how to swim before joining the team?
A. Younger children (6 & under) must be able to doggie paddle as a start to learning the freestyle swim stroke to get across the pool. Children ages 6 or under can stop and rest by holding onto the side of the pool or the lane line before continuing on. Children older than 6, should be able to swim freestyle across the pool without resting.
Q. What swim techniques will my child learn?
A. Swimmers of all ages will be taught to a racing dive, and to swim freestyle and backstroke. More advanced swimmers will be introduced to breaststroke, butterfly, and flip turns.
Q. Will my son have to wear a speedo?
A. No! Teams choose a jammer suit for boys, a bicycle-short suit that comes to just above the knee in length. Team suits are required to be purchased for all team members. Girls wear a one-piece suit and boys a jammer.
Q. When will the team practice?
A. Tiger Sharks will have an 8 week season. Swimmer evaluations will be conducted on the first practice date to determine which practice session the swimmers will be placed in. The team practices beginning in early May and run through June.
Q. When are meets conducted?
A. Dual meets do not usually begin until children are out of school for the summer--depending upon the calendar. At times first meets begin during the last week of school, but the league avoids hosting meets on as many school nights as possible. Teams usually host dual meets on Saturday mornings, and Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday nights depending upon the availability of their pool.
Q. How many meets would we compete in?
A. Teams have four dual/tri meets, Swimmers are not required to participate in all swim meets. Dual/tri meets may be either in person or virtual (each team swims in their own pool and race results are merged electronically). Swimmers must RSVP for swim meets through the website to participate. Relays are perhaps the most fun aspect of a meet however, if one swimmer does not show up, the relay team does not swim. It is very disappointing to the other swimmers if a team member does not show up. The league will be back in action this season with a Championship and All-Star Meet!! More details will be communicated as they are provided by the league.
Q. What if my child cannot make all practices or meets, is it a problem?
A. Obviously, the more practices a child can attend the faster he/she improves. The team realizes that there are times when a swimmer is sick or has a prior commitment.
Q. What are the fees associated with registration?
A. The registration fee includes the swim instruction fees for coaches, the team t-shirt and swim cap, and any awards the swimmer wins at the dual, Championship Meet, or All-Star meets as well as sports insurance coverage. The team swim suit is not covered in the team registration fee. Registration fee: 1st swimmer is $125 and $115 for each additional swimmer from the same family.
Q. Do parents need to participate?
A. Yes, it takes about 50 parent volunteers from both teams to run a dual meet. There are many EASY jobs that need to be filled in order to hold meets at home, away, and at championship meets.
Q. Who will be teaching my children?
A. Highly qualified, certified instructors who teach swimming, or competed in year-round, summer league, high school, or at the college level. To learn more, check out our Coaches page.
