Important First Week Information for Tiger Sharks
It was so exciting to see all of our new and returning swimmers at the pool yesterday! Let's keep it going with another great practice this afternoon!
Now that swim season has officially kicked off, please take some time to read the following information.
Swim Evaluations for New Swimmers
During the first two weeks of practice coaches will be evaluating our new swimmers to ensure that they have the basic swim skills needed to be safe in the water. With nearly 130 swimmers on the team, our coaches are not able to provide basic swim lessons during team practice, and instead will be using our short practice time to develop strength, endurance, and technique.
While it is not necessary to be proficient in each of the four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly), we must ensure that swimmers can safely and successfully swim the length of the pool (25 yards).
Coaches will speak with parents individually if they have concerns about a swimmer's ability to participate this year, and registration refunds will be granted if it is determined that a swimmer needs additional development before participating on the team.
Team Communications
If you have not already done so, please follow us on Facebook and join our Remind group so that you can get timely updates regarding weather cancellations, practices, meets, and more.
Emails will be sent weekly to provide important information about practices, meets and additional team information. Please make sure that you take time to reach each email and reach out if you have any questions.
Last Call for Sponsors and Team Shirt Orders
I will be placing team shirt orders next week. Each swimmer will receive a shirt and you should have selected their size during registration. If you would like to order additional shirts for your swimmer or other family members, you can place an order online through our Team Shop.
Because sponsors will be featured on the back of our team shirts, we also ask that if you are interested in sponsoring the team for the 2026 season, please reach out to [email protected]. More information may be found on our Sponsors page.
Practice
We encourage you to attend as many practices as possible, but we understand that families are busy and things come up that may prevent your attendance. You are not required to notify coaches if you have to miss practice.
For the month of May, we will practice Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at the following times:
- Ages 6 and under: 5:00 - 5:30 PM
- Ages 7 - 8: 5:30 - 6:00 PM
- Ages 9-10: 6:00 - 6:30 PM
- Ages 11+: 6:30 - 7:00 PM
Please make sure that your swimmer has an appropriate suite, goggles, and a towel for each practice.
Please note: We will not have practice the week of May 19.
Team Swimsuits
Swim Freak is an official sponsor of the Maverick Swim League and they will be at our pool from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 19 for swimsuit fittings and purchases. Although we do not have practice on that day, swim team board members will host representatives from Swim Freak at the pool for fittings and purchases.
If you are not able to attend practice on this date and wish to purchase a team suit, you may visit the Thousand Oaks location of Swim Freak to purchase your suit.
You are not required to wear a team suit to practice, however we do require all female swimmers to wear a one-piece suit to avoid any issues as swimmers practice diving off the blocks.
Swimsuit Swap
We know that kids grow fast! You probably have some suits from last season (or before) laying around that your kids can no longer use. So let's trade! If you would like to participate in our first ever swimsuit swap, please bring your used/good condition suits to practice by Tuesday, May 12. We will wash and sort suits by sizes, and have them ready for you to choose from on Wednesday May 13 or Thursday, May 14.
Suits should be appropriate for team practice, such as one-pieces, jammers, or trunks. Any suits remaining at the end of next week will be donated.

Swim Meet and Volunteer Positions:
We need YOU to volunteer at swim meets! It takes approximately 50 people per meet to make it happen. Each family is required to earn a minimum of 8 volunteer points. Attached are step-by-step instructions for signing up for volunteer jobs.
Please note that pool-side volunteers must be 18 years or older. If you have a middle or high school student that would like to earn community service hours, we encourage them to sign-up to work our concession stand!
If this is your first year on our swim team, check out our volunteer page on our website to learn more about each position.
Some positions are essential to running an effective meet and require additional league training.
- Stroke and Turn Judge: Stands poolside and watches for swim stroke infractions. Requires easy training at a 2 hour league run free clinic to learn the current league & swim stroke rules. Great for people with competitive swim experience, but ANYONE can be taught at a free league clinic.
- Meet Referee & Starter: Ensures fairness for all swimmers. Requires easy training at a free league run clinic and must have worked at least 1 year prior as a Stroke & Turn Judge. Knows the current league rules.
Maverick Swim League offers three opportunities for training:
- Where: Jewish Community Center, 12500 NW Military Highway, Rooms 227/8/9
- When: Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17.
- Recertification sessions will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
- New official training will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
If you are interested in one of the following positions (and a $50 registration rebate) please reach out to me for more information.

If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of our board members. You can often find us around the pool, or just send an email!
See you at the pool!
